BluePrintPensionServices (BPPS) consists of dedicated pension professionals with a shared mission and vision. By making pension solutions accessible for informal workers, the current and future generations will benefit. However, this requires specific knowledge and expertise since the informal sector has specific characteristics that have too be considered when designing pension solutions.
These are: the high inflation which is often a characteristic of emerging economies; limited financial infrastructure, including limited access to banks; corruption, fraud; logistical imperfections and therefore high administrative costs; individuals with low financial literacy and lack of pension knowledge and experience and lack of trustworthy identification.
Yet, BPPS experienced that with the technological developments on mobile phones and specifically with payments solutions reaching and serving clients in the informal economy, micro pension became affordable and feasible in many parts of the world. Based on these experiences, BPPS has created a BluePrint business model that enables clients to administer and service pension participants for a few dollars a year.
To serve the clients in the informal sector the focus is on affordable high quality services and products as well as knowledge exchange of best practices. For a pension participant, this means personalized info on his/her personal pension account with biometric identification and mobile payments, as well as accessible and manageable at any time through mobile phone or web-account. For an existing pension administrator, this means partnering with micro pension experts which guarantees longtime support.
The BBPS clients are governments, non-governmental organizations, pension administrators/provident funds or insurance companies amongst other financial institutions.
BPPS offers feasibility studies, business design, business start-up guidance and business excellence support to set up pension solutions that target workers in the informal economy.
What is feasible
A preliminary feasibility study aims to map opportunities and risks in setting up a micro pension solution or pension company in a specific country.
Validation is key
Starting a project on assumptions will lead to failure. Therefore, testing the assumptions in the validation phase is a key part of the process.
Designing and starting up
The BluePrint approach aims to permit the clients to become an authority themselves. Therefore, an open communication and role division is part of the working plan.
Becoming excellent and independent
The BPPS business excellence services support the organization in further developing the pension solution after initial startup. The support is available to develop new products but also to optimize the existing services.
Designing inclusive pension solutions can only be done by focussing on the client’s perspective and making this the centre point of the design.
BPPS is currently working in Ghana for People’s Pension Holding where three experts from BPPS help setting up a new pension fund in Ghana for people in the informal economy of Ghana. In assignment for the UN we are researching the possibility of extending the current pension schemes on the Solomon Islands and Fiji to people working in the informal economy. Past assignments are performed in India and Guatemala.
BluePrint Pension Services gives strategic, operational and technical support to guide our clients in finding the right business model and distribution model to services their clients in such a way that it is a pleasurable experience.
We gained our experience in the formal and informal economies globally. Getting people who earn between 2 and 10 US dollars a day teaches us valuable lessons how to service and realize recurring savings. Especially clients who because of profile specifics or other reasons do not (regularly) save need special attention and detailed research. We believe that with the knowledge from both established pension markets and micro pensions we can design unique full inclusive pension solutions.
